A study released in July by the Taxation and Economic Policy think tank showed that undocumented immigrants paid nearly $437 million in taxes in Colorado in 2022.
If the undocumented people in Colorado – estimated at 156,000 individuals – had been allowed to work legally, the think tank estimated that they would have paid an additional $40.2 million in taxes that year alone.
Undocumented people pay federal, state and local taxes, the report noted.
Despite their contribution of $100 billion paid overall by undocumented people into the U.S. economy, the think tank reported that many were unable to access services that the taxes paid for, and many were paying a higher tax rate than the top one percent of Americans.
